“Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.” Luke 8:26 NASB. The word Gerasene” means “walled” or shut in. The word Galilee means “circle” or “circuit”, to move all the way around (a place or thing. They were moving and charged with the circuit power of Jesus-Yeshua. The Bible says they went the OPPOSITE way. In the last chapter of Luke, they were doing miracles. In the last portion of scriptures, Jesus-Yeshua is teaching and it’s a pleasant time. But now the atmosphere has changed and Jesus-Yeshua leads them to a place that’s dark. This trip starts out with a horrific storm that is so powerful, the disciples fear for their very lives. Jesus/ Yeshua SLEEPS DURING THE STORM. Notice how we can be going about our life, we’re coasting along, life is going pretty well; the spouse, the kids, and the career are on course and then BAM! We find ourself headed in an opposite direction and there is a storm so violent and boisterous we fear for our life or pray like Job, for HaShem to take it.
Just about the time Jesus/Yeshua says, “Peace be still” and rebukes the wind and the waves, we arrive at a place called, “Gaderenes” or “Gerasene” and it means “Walled in,” and “shut in.” We want to leave because this place is so dark and so demonic, and we are already worn out from praying through the violent storm that just left us, however, we are stuck there.
Now I want you to picture Jesus/ Yeshua getting out of the boat and his disciples being greeted by a man who is described as “having devils a LONG time.” HAVE YOU EVER HAD DEVILS A LONG TIME? Have you ever had a strongman that controlled your mouth, your time, or your eyes and so forth? Oh, I know, you and I are holy, we don’t have any devils to battle. No, we have it all together. Yes, it’s everybody else with planks in the eye. We see their planks, their pointed fingers, and their pride, but we got it together! (sarcasm). I’m looking in the mirror.
Peter thought he had it together. I feel Peter’s pain. Yes, in one verse, Peter was saying everything right, so much so that Jesus-Yeshua said, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church…” Matthew 16:18 NIV. But in the next verse, Jesus-Yeshua said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Matthew 16:23 NIV.
Maybe the devil we battle is looking at porn at work? Maybe our devil is pride? Maybe our devil is self-pity, or being untruthful. Perhaps we quote the Shema everyday and pray and try our best to be righteous, but our nephesh continues to rule us.
I recently watched a video about a man in Africa, who had a mandate on his life. He had seen all the bloody slaughter of war. Had to take a truckload of skull bones of the dead out of a place to have a place of worship. He fasted and prayed and fought demons and opened assemblies, but yet, the Father told him that if he would have died that very day he would not have been found worthy.
One of the greatest journeys of my life was getting deliverance. I laid on a couch too sick to work and alone, having lost it all, the Holy Spirit, the Ruach HaKodesh took me on a journey of weeping and repenting and freedom. I was delivered from a whole lot of junk, so much so that after a few months went by a neighbor came over to check on me and said, “There is something different about you.” She said, “It’s as if you have a whole new countenance.”
After a year of intense therapy with the Holy Ruach Spirit, I got rid of a bunch of junk. I HAVE MORE TO GET RID OF. “And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.” Luke 8:27 NASB.
I see dead people–walking dead people. HE LIVED IN A PLACE OF THE DEAD, SURROUNDED by DEAD MENS BONES IN THE TOMBS. He was dead and walled in. We can be so caught up in religion that we live in a dead encased tomb. We forget “to be a light.” We get so fixed on knowing the Torah that we forget to do the Torah, like loving our neighbors as ourselves.
“Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, DO NOT TORMENT ME.” Luke 8:28 NASB. Did you catch that? He doesn’t want Jesus-Yeshua to torment him. This man is living in a graveyard, naked and cutting himself and yet he says, “do not torment me.” Sounds like he is already in TORMENT to me!
I know, it’s the demons talking to Jesus/ Yeshua. But are they talking to us? Are they talking through us like they did Peter? Is there a place in our life that is filthy and we have grown so comfortable with it, we don’t want Jesus-Yeshua to torment us? Has a demon tried to place us in a dead place? The graveyard has no life. Jesus-Yeshua has a problem with this guy that’s similar to a man he healed who was blind, he had to lay hands on him TWICE.
The Bible says in verse Luke 8:29, (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he broke the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) AKJV. Yeshua had already been driven by the Holy Ruach into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and He overcame.
Sometimes, the very people we think are shackled, are freer than we are. The Bible says in Romans, “Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.” Romans 2:1 NASB. Have you ever judged the person next to you and had HaShem show you that very same sin in your own heart? I have. Often we condemn ourselves.
Something happens that is very significant to the story because Jesus- Yeshua had commanded the demons to go, but they weren’t budging. Could we have a demon that just won’t budge? Yes, so what does he do? “And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him.” Luke 8:30 NASB.
Once Yeshua gets the name, they begin to beg and plead to go into pigs. The key was getting the name. So I’m asking myself and you the same question tonight, “what is the name?” Why? Because once you get the name, something amazing happens! The man was clean, dressed and in his right mind and the Bible says Yeshua told him this, “Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.” Luke 8:39 NASB.
