Leviathan: a transliterated Hebrew word (livyathan), meaning “twisted,” “coiled.” Picture a serpent coiled up ready to strike.
“The name לִוְיָתָן is a derivation from the root לוה lvh “to twine; to join,” with an adjectival suffix ן-, with a literal meaning of “wreathed, twisted in folds.”
This spirit will TWIST everything.
“No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse him (Leviathan)…” (Job 41:10 NASB).
The Father will destroy him in the new Kingdom.
“In that day the LORD will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, With His fierce and great and mighty sword, Even Leviathan the twisted serpent; And He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.” Isaiah 27:1 NASB).
I must warn you this is lengthier than most of my teachings but will offer many details on the spirit of Leviathan. I have broken this teaching down into 7 segments.
I will also touch on the journey David took while fighting what I believe was this giant serpent. Also, I want to address using scripture, that spirits many times are sent from the Father, not satan. If your ministry or position in the Body of Yeshua has been under grievous attacks, your marriage, family, and health as well, this is a message for you. If you have been criticized and hated as David said (without a cause) again, this will expose the root. I will be breaking this up in sections, but let’s dig right in to this sea monster and see if we can uncover its hidden attributes.
When my husband and I first met, and shortly after marriage, we began to deal with many attacks on our relationship. He had been single for 12 years, and the change was difficult for many. We also were being attacked in the assemblies we were ministering at. The spiritual attacks were so horrific, we were worn out. I remember several times watching this spirit manifest in people. What seemed most noticeable was a twisting of our words, actions, and lies about our character. Again, Leviathan means twisting.
Yeshua dealt with this issue.
“. . . The scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.” (Luke 11:53-54).
To try and explain the power behind this spirit one has to go to the water and the storms that rage from the sea for Leviathan is called a ‘sea monster’ for a reason. Think Tsunami and hurricane–it leaves destruction in its path. It picks you up and tosses you like a powerful wave at sea, about the time you try to stand up, Bam, you are thrown in another direction. I would compare it to the eye of the storm. It’s like someone holding your head under water, and the minute you come up for air and think you can get relief, you are submerged again and again. This continues until you have no power left and you welcome death; which is what Job prayed for in chapter three. This is when he mentions leviathan for the first time. I’ll come back to that in a later portion for it deals with pride and being stiff-necked.
“When the Leviathan is hungry, he sends forth from his mouth a heat so great as to make all the waters of the deep boil, and if he would put his head into paradise no living creature could endure the odor of him (ib.) R. Johanan, (Bek. 55b; B. B. l.c.).”
Our words and our prayers should be a sweet smelling perfume. Leviathan is a rotten stench that no man can endure. When this demonic monster raises its ugly head, all hell breaks forth from the deep. Every bit of division, jealousy, wickedness, and hatred comes roaring up like a dragon with fire coming forth out of its mouth and often from the very ones who in the past loved you the most. That’s correct. I will show you with scripture how this occurs and what to look for.
When this spirit is active, this nastiness is being poured out on you in a measure unexplainable. Let me give you a few examples of what my husband and I were walking through during this time (2011-2013). I do not want to mention the names of those who the spirits were rousing up, but just show you the fierceness of the spirit and how it works through people connected to you.
When we met, we were both doing ministry at two different places. Soon there were allegations from men and women in leadership. They falsely accused us of trying to start a ‘church’ and steal their sheep–as if they owned sheep, but that’s another teaching. In all actuality, we were trying to uncover the roots of our faith and were not interested in these positions. After threatening phone calls from the pastor, I shut down and did not return to ministry there, leaving a typed letter of resignation.
We felt ostracized by our “church’ family and accused of many things that were false. It felt like a divorce for both of us as we left both assemblies without a blessing.
Leviathan means (Coiling and twisting the truth).
We were attacked in our integrity, identity, in our places of employment and gifting. My husband was Chief of police in a small city at the time, and he had to watch his back 24/7. Even the news media became involved. During this period we had multiple dreams, and one night we each had a dream and the mayor, who was Christian, also had a dream that night involving me. She called us into her office to discuss this. In her dream, she was riding in her patrol car and saw that I had hit a beast like a man and damaged him with my car, but that he was getting up and bent on destroying me. She said I was severely shaken.
My brother also had a dream during this time that I was run over by a yellow dune buggy. He said I was laying in the road and looked mangled and bloody.
But the hardest attack seemed to be with our marriage covenant. This was vehemently attacked by many. One close family member threatened to not speak to my husband again if he married me. I was called multiple unpleasing words and was accused of marrying my husband for his money. Sadly, they were unaware of business debts he had been left with or the fact that I was not concerned about money but truly loved my husband.
I went to the Father and asked Him, “What are we fighting? This is the strongest spirit I have ever fought!” I heard in my ear ‘leviathan.’ Now, back in 2011/12, I was familiar with Jezebel and other types of spirits, but I had not delved into Leviathan. I went straight to reading the passages in the Bible about the spirit but still wondered if I had heard correctly. Later that week we went to visit my father out of town. While in the bathroom there, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “The spirit you are fighting is in this room.” I turned around and gazed at a classic Marilyn Monroe picture my mother had hung years before she had passed away. I began to study each feature until my eyes landed on Humphry Bogart who was wearing a button on his lapel that said “Leviathan, manager of the theatre.”
Why did the artist put ‘leviathan’ on Bogart’s button in the painting?
“Humphrey Bogart joined the U.S. Navy in 1918 and ferried troops home from Europe on the USS Leviathan.” Also notice the picture highlighted on the seats. This is a picture of a strong spirit that is very prevalent in Hollywood and the entertainment business.
Bogart was a coxswain. The coxswain is responsible for steering the boat and coordinating the power and rhythm of the rowers. Leviathan has been steering Hollywood for too long, but I want to talk about how it may affect you and your family, and especially if you are in ministry or hold the office of the prophet or another office that is doing work for the Kingdom on the front lines.
It is hard to make out from the photo above, but in the large print in my mother’s bathroom, I stood in shock–my mouth agape. The Father was speaking to me, and He was warning me about LEVIATHAN.
Job knew firsthand about this twisting serpent.
“Can you pull Leviathan out [of the water] with a fishhook or tie its tongue down with a rope?”
Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they keep antagonizing you and provoking you. No matter what you say they twist it or come back with something to try and continuously stir the pot? That’s it.
“Can you put a ring through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
Will it plead with you for mercy or speak tenderly to you?” (Job 41:1-3 GWT).
The answer is NO!
It is the stiffest neck you will ever encounter and pride that is as high as the King of Tyre.
“Strength resides in its neck;
dismay goes before it.
“He looks on everything that is high;”
He is king over all the SONS OF PRIDE” (Job 41: 22,34 NASB).
I believe this spirit is connected to the spirit of Athaliah and pride. If you have never studied the spirit of Athaliah click HERE.
If you are facing leviathan, stay hidden under the Shadow of the Almighty! Do not come out until He says so. Do not try and fight this battle in the flesh. Do not open your mouth because the pride is so thick and the fear and jealousy behind the spirit operating in the person (unbeknownst to them) is horrific–tightly woven.
“His strong scales are his pride,
Shut up as with a tight seal.
“One is so near to another
That no air can come between them.” Psalm 41:15-16).
No air can come between them. Air is a funny word used here. In Hebrew– its Strong’s 3703 Ruach. It represents the very Breath of HaShem. It represents His Holy Spirit Wind. Is His Spirit speaking and flowing through us? According to this verse above, no air could come, no Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) could flow through to penetrate the heart–no amount of His Word either.
Many people are being used as a conduit for this spirit unaware. We must pray for them, but why does the Father allow such spirits to attack or come to destroy us? I believe we can learn much about this spirit of Leviathan by following David’s journey.
“Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and a spear was in Saul’s hand. Saul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David escaped from his presence twice” (1 Samuel 18:10-11 NASB).
Prior to the (Leviathan) spirit wanting to kill you, it comes through a person who loves you but then becomes fearful of losing you or jealous of you.
“Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer” (1 Samuel 16:21 NASB).
In just two chapters, Saul has lost that loving feeling! He now has a murdering spirit. This spirit wants to kill you–literally. It would never admit to it, but it wants you dead.
Now, let’s remember that the Father Chose Saul as king and had him anointed by Samuel. This is not some crazed lunatic. Well, not yet! This is the King, but he has lost the power, and soon he will lose the intimacy with the Father. Out of frustration, he will try and grip or hang on to the title of King with all his might. The one he loved so much is now his all-out enemy. The one he made his armor bearer he now wants to destroy. Look for a person in your life who is afraid you will steal something they deem of great value. Their power, their favor, attention, position (family), inheritance, money, or love.
This spirit will go to great lengths to destroy you. It lies, it twists, and it causes absolute chaos out of fear and jealousy. I’m not talking about a few arguments or an attack on Facebook, but an all-out assault.
“Who can [e]remove his outer coat?
Who can approach him with a double bridle? Who can open the doors of his face,
With his terrible teeth all around.
(Those teeth will nash and bite you–[nash] to grind or strike (the teeth) together, especially in rage or pain)
This spirit has both—rage and pain.
“Out of his mouth go burning lights;
Sparks of fire shoot out.
Smoke goes out of his nostrils,
As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.
His breath kindles coals,
And a flame goes out of his mouth” (Job 41:13-14, 19-21 NKJV).
James chapter three mentions this.
“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell” (James 3:5-6).
In my next portion, we will delve deeper into the water and layers of His Word to uncover the spirit of Leviathan and how what it accuses you of, is actually what it is doing. Here is an example from 1st Kings.
“When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?” He said, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals” (1 Kings 18:18 NASB).
Who created everything under the heavens? Yes, even leviathan. He also speaks to Job in Chapter 41 and says this, “No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse him (leviathan);
Who then is he that can stand before Me?
“Who has given to Me that I should repay him?
Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine” (Job 41 10-11 NASB).
“For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR? Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:34-36 NASB).
The Father uses all things for His Glory.
